The steps below are designed to help in planning, research, write and review your findings

The most important thing is to begin and start early. If you have enough time to plan and research, write and revise your work you won't have to rush. Once you've started, it's likely that you'll also have something that you can improve on.

Step 1 - Understand the task of assessment

Before you begin your examination, make sure you analyse the assessment question or task and understand what you have been asked to complete. It will help you narrow your focus on your study.

Step 2 - Plan

Planning how you will answer the assessment question or task can help you focus and make writing your assessment simpler. You'll have a format that you must follow, and will ensure that you complete the assessment task correctly.

Step 3 - Do your research

Do some research on your subject to find reliable and relevant facts. You can find some of these in your course material and suggested readings. However, you could also try:

Step 4 - Write

Then it's the time to begin writing.

First draft

Write your first draft following your strategy. Infill in any gaps by noting your main points for each section.

Write freely. Write as much as you can without stressing about whether the words are 100 per cent right.

It might be more efficient to start with the conclusion to ensure you are aware of where the writing is taking.

Don't start the introduction until the end.

Don't waste time trying to perfect this draft as it will alter!

Fine tune

Revise your draft and check that it makes sense and contains everything it must.

Refine the spelling, and ensure your writing flows smoothly.

Keep different duplicates of drafts as you may want to go back to them later.

Compile your bibliography or reference list.

Step 5 - Review

If you're content, take a break. You should take some time to relax so you can review your work from a different perspective. Edit and proofread your work.

Check out the bigger picture

Have you answered the question you were set? Check your work against the marking plan as well as the question.

Does the structure follow correctly? Are the contents logically organized?

Are you able to include all relevant sections? Examples include the title page, introduction page, conclusion the list of references?

Does your report read properly and flow effortlessly from one section to the next? The best way to verify that is reading the assessment in loud.

Have you used in your own words, and acknowledged all of your sources?

Are your opinions well-presented?

Check the details

Have you ever used academic English (if it was required)?

Examine the grammar punctuation, spelling, and grammar. Do not rely on a spelling checker (it will not pick up every word).

Check your referencing. Is your APA referencing correct?

Are your pages numbered?

Have you put your name, the student ID as well as the details of your assessment and the date on each page?

Tip - If possible request a friend or family member to proofread your assessment, as it can be difficult to find errors in your work.

When you're satisfied, you can submit your review.
